Shakeology


I talked Shakeology up for YEARS!  I knew it was the BEST thing I'd ever find, and I always wanted to try it~ but I never wanted to spend the money I knew I spend on it, little did I know, it would change my life, and actually even SAVE me money too! 

I ordered Shakeology after my first round of 21 Day Fix, and I began it in early April 2015.  It came with a 30 day calendar of recipes, but I also found hundreds online, and since I'm naturally a cook and baker, I thought up so many yummy things on my own!  My very first Shakeology was 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk,  1 Tbsp of PB2 (powdered peanut butter), 1 banana, and a few ice cubes. It WAS love at first sip.  I remember texting my coach immediately, and saying those exact words.

After 6 Months of Drinking Shakeology~ I was featured! 
 I had no idea on that day that it would've made my mornings as easy as it has since I started drinking it, no clue that my cravings would go away the way they did, no clue that I'd have as much energy as I had, and even better, I wouldn't imagine that Shakeology would lower my cholesterol, improve my iron levels, AND improve my IBS symptoms in just a few weeks of drinking it.

I've now perfected my Shakeology to 10-12oz of liquid, and I use 4oz of unsweetened coconut almond milk, 6-8oz filtered water, 1/2 cup fruit of choice, 1 scoop of Shakeology, and I typically add a pure extract if I'm going for a particular flavor, or cinnamon, or something of that nature.  Other great things to add are 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp chia seeds (BUT these ARE already in it!), espresso powder if you're going for a mocha taste (BUT we have Cafe Latte now!), or even pudding mixes if you're O.K with the additives within it! <3You could literally mix ANYTHING in with your Shakeology, and it's AMAZING!  I love anything chocolate, peanut butter, and/or fruity... So it's safe to say I mix it up daily.  I have 2-3 flavors on hand at all times.  My favorite part is that I get EVERYTHING I need in just one simple glass, to include not only my fruits, veggies, superfoods, and vitamins, but probiotics, prebiotics, antioxidants, minerals, phytonutrients, and MORE!



How Did Shakeology Change My Life?




SO~ WHAT IS SHAKEOLOGY?

Shakeology, contrary to many beliefs is not a protein shake.  It's a health and wellness shake proven
to aide in weight loss, muscle tone, gain in energy, help with cravings, and more.  Shakeology has 70+ ingredients, superfoods, fruits and vegetables, antioxidants, probiotics, prebitoics, phytonutrients, and vitamins and minerals. To make just one shake at home, it would cost over $780 to purchase all of the ingredients!!!  AND to get the same value of nutrition from the amount of fruits and vegetables in Shakeology, it would cost over $41! So what are all of these ingredients? Why are they important and beneficial?


Vitamins & Minerals: 


Did you know that every day, your body produces skin, muscle, and bone?! It churns out rich red blood that carries nutrients and oxygen to remote outposts, and it sends nerve signals skipping along thousands of miles of brain and body pathways. It also formulates chemical messengers that shuttle from one organ to another, issuing the instructions that help sustain your life.
BUT in order to do all this, your body requires some raw materials. These include at least 30 vitamins, minerals, and dietary components that your body needs but cannot manufacture on its own in sufficient amounts.

Vitamins and minerals are considered essential nutrients— they perform hundreds of roles in the body. They help your bones, heal wounds, and bolster your immune system. They also convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage.
But trying to keep track of what all these vitamins and minerals do can be confusing. Read enough articles on the topic, and your eyes may swim with the alphabet-soup references to these nutrients, which are known mainly be their initials (such as vitamins A,B,C,D,E, and K—to name just a few).
THEN there’s the issue of actually taking a vitamin—yes you could just take a multi-vitamin, but sometimes they don’t give you everything, and they’re just so darn BIG!! Personally, I used to take a B12 complex and D3 vitamin, BUT they were both gummy!! AND as we know, they’re very sugary… So they kind of defeated the whole purpose.


Although all vitamins (and minerals) are considered micronutrients, vitamins and minerals differ in basic ways. Vitamins are organic and can be broken down by heat, air, or acid. However, minerals are inorganic and hold on to their chemical structure.
So why does this matter? It means the minerals in soil and water easily find their way into your body through the plants, fish, animals, and fluids you consume. But it’s tougher to shuttle vitamins from food and other sources into your body because cooking, storage, and simple exposure to air can inactivate these more fragile compounds.
SO what does this mean?! It means that get vitamins from whole foods which aren’t cooked that are high in vitamins, BUT once it’s cooked, the vitamins are often take out of it by the process… The minerals, however, are still within certain foods we eat no matter what we do to them… SO It’s actually quite necessary for us all to take vitamins daily~ 


PhytonutrientsPhytonutrients aren't essential for keeping you alive, unlike the vitamins and minerals that plant foods contain. BUT when you eat or drink phytonutrients, they may help prevent disease and keep your body working properly~ so ultimately, you DO want them in your diet!!!! There found in fruits and vegetables, and other plant-based foods like whole grains, beans, nuts, and tea. Some Phytonutrients aid in reducing the risk of inflammation, cancer, others reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses.  Since Shakeology is LOADED with these babies, and you're getting a FULL daily does of fruits and veggies in just one glass of Shakeology, is safe to say you're doing your body GOOD! 

Antioxidants: Antioxidants play an important role in overall health. They are natural compounds found in some foods that help neutralize free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals are substances that  
occur naturally in our bodies but attack the fats, protein and the DNA in our cells, which can cause different types of diseases and accelerate the aging process.

Digestive Enzymes: Prebiotics, probiotics, fiber, and other enzymes which help the breakdown of the proteins within Shakeology and also help in the digestion of foods and increase the absorption rate of those foods for optimum health.  For me, Shakeology has improved my entire digestive system.  I have IBS, and my symptoms have improved to the point of barley existing!  I'm able to enjoy the foods I was never able to eat before, and I'm able to eat them now without hesitation.  I used to lay on the couch rolled into a ball! I wasn't able to move because the pain was so bad.  

Protein:  

As some tend to believe, Shakeology is not a protein shake—it actually has WAY less protein than even the average protein shake, averaging at about 16g per serving…. Protein is just one macronutrient of the many you get from Shakeology. When drinking a protein shake, you’re only getting protein. For some, that may be the goal, but for others, it’s often just misconception, and a matter of being misinformed.


Actually, your body only absorbs protein so quickly, and it could only absorb about 15g with an hour 1/2 (the time the entire protein shake is within your body, and gone), SO that being said, the EXTRA protein you THINK you need from loaded shakes (also loaded with artificial sweeteners and flavors), is actually just a waste... Pretty interesting stuff... (The average "protein" shake has apx. 20g of protein, most have more).  
Continue on, because Shakeology doesn't JUST have protein to offer!....
The protein per serving for each Shakeology flavor is listed below:
• Tropical has 16g
• Chocolate has 17g
• Chocolate Vegan has 16g
• Greenberry has 17g
• Strawberry has 16g
• Vanilla has 16g
• Cafe Latte has 16g
There isn’t just one source of protein in Shakeology; there’s a blend in each flavor, and the blend differs depending on the flavor. .
Here are the protein sources:
Whey, Sacha Inchi, Chia, Flax, Quinoa, Amaranth, Brown Rice, and Peas.
There are are at least 5 proteins in each flavor of Shakeology, and the blend varies from flavor to flavor~ this is because of the the different flavors each protein gives off, among other reasons I'm sure.

The main purpose of this Super Protein Blend is that it helps build lean muscle, improves skin and hair, supports mental clarity, and it reduces cravings. Our body needs more than just one type of protein, hence the blend… and quite frankly whey protein, as we know, tastes awful by itself (unless of course you’re buying those awful whey protein based powders filled with artificial sweeteners and fillers—because 99% are, and that’s the ONLY way it’ll taste GOOD!!!)
But again, protein alone, any kind~ tastes awful alone-- which is where the other ingredients I spoke on, and will speak on,come in!  We use yellow pea protein in our formulations to balance the taste of whey protein by providing a slight hint of nutty/sweetness. It also rounds out the amino acid profile of the product.
Also, there is data to support that pea protein is a medium speed release protein, compared to whey, which is fast (or casein which is slow~so it's the one we aim to have for nighttime recovery). We aim to deliver a balanced delivery system for our consumers.

However, The primary source of protein in the regular flavors of Shakeology is from whey, which comes from milk. Whey is one of the most bioavailable protein sources. Translation: it rapidly gets to work on repairing your muscles and the amino acids are easily absorbed and used by your body

NO SOY!
In our vegan Shakeology formulas, we blended brown rice protein with pea protein to create a complete protein source with high levels of lysine and methionine. These two very important amino acids are often limited in most plant-based diets. Along with brown rice protein and pea protein, we also blended in sacha inchi, chia, quinoa, flax, amaranth, and spirulina. There is absolutely no soy protein used in any Shakeology formulations. Though crafting this proprietary plant-based protein blend might sound easy, it IS one of a kind!



How to use Shakeology?

When you get Shakeology, you're given a 30 day calendar with recipes!  I love them all!  Like I said, I use 10-12oz of liquid at all times, a little unsweetened coconut almond milk for creaminess, and mostly water, fruit, and 1 scoop Shakeology!  You could use skim milk, 1% milk, coconut milk, almond milk, rice milk, soy milk, or water; 8-16 oz (but as I said it's best with at least 10 oz).  The less water you use, the thicker it is, the more you use, the thinner it is.  You could use 2 ice cubes like I use, or you could use a cup of ice!  The more ice you use, the thicker it gets!  OR you could just toss is in your Shakeology shaker cup with a liquid of choice and shake it up!  When I do it like that I always add in ice because it make it nice and cold, and helps it get a little thicker! :)  

Are There Other Things You Could Do With It?

SO many things!! I've baked with it, I've made no bake desserts, snacks with it.  I've made ice cream and frozen yogurt!  I've even made pancakes!  It's VERY versatile!  There are 100's and 100's of recipes for anything your little heart desires!
